The Last Supper

To get into see Leonardo Da Vinci's The Last Supper, you need to do one of two things. Either book months in advance or join a tour group. Coming into Milan, we had done neither. When we arrived in Milan, yesterday, we had bought the Milano Card. For €10 you a travel card for 48 hours and discounts for 72 hours. There was also a small ad for a tour company that guaranteed a viewing. Against our better judgement (remember Madrid?), we booked. Best tour ever. It included entry to the cathedral, where we heard more than had learned yesterday, entry to La Scalla Opera House (unfortunately no performance or we would have loved to have booked), a quick tour of Milan and of course, entry to see The Last Supper.

The Last Supper is on a wall in a small church, the room is humidity controlled and we needed to remove rain coats etc (as it was raining) and place them in plastic bags. We also had to enter two chambers before the room which controlled the humidity further. It is all well controlled and secured. You have exactly 15 minutes to see the painting before you ate forced to leave, again through humidity control chambers. Unfortunately, no photos are allowed but again, you could never do it justice. The memory we take away is outstanding and will be with us forever.

That was the end of tour. We then took an opportunity to see sketches from Leonardo's Codex Atlanticum. This was only 10 euros. A bargain it seemed at the time. However, when left here we headed to the museum at the Castello Sforzesco, built by the second richest family in Milan in the 14th century. It was only €3 to get in and it took us over 4 hours to see not even close to everything.

After that, needless to say we were knackered, so we headed back to hotel for a shower, a quick bite and an early night. We have an early star tomorrow.

Thought for the day. Some group tours aren't that bad after all.
