Leaving Europe

This morning, we prepared to leave Europe. We'd found a laundromat close by so headed there straight after breakfast. This gave us clean clothes for the remainder of the holiday.

After the laundry, we headed off to the train station by taxi. This seemed like the quickest way to get to the airport and we were not disappointed. We arrived in no time. We had a few hours to kill once we arrived, so we had a bit of a wander through the usual array of airport shops.

We were flying to Hong Kong via KLM, so there was to be a stopover in Amsterdam, just one hour. When flying from Rome to Hong Kong via Amsterdam, you clear immigration in Amsterdam. This was a bit traumatic. When arriving in Paris five weeks ago, they did NOT stamp our passports. The Dutch immigration guy picked that up in a flash. Any conversation thar has sentences such as "Why don't you have a stamp in your passport?" and " You have been in Europe illegally!" tend not to go well. Luckily, he handed us over to another guy who took our itinerary details and copies of our passports and said he would sort out the French authorities. He sent us on our way and wished us a safe trip.

Thought for the day. Don't assume that just because you didn't get a passport stamp, that you didn't need one.
