Pompeii was stunning, it is bigger than we realized, but we should not have been too surprised as the site is a complete roman town. Complete that is with bakeries, taverns, restaurants, houses, streets, squares and even brothels.

Herculaneum on the other is much smaller as it was really a town for the rich of roman times. It is also much better preserved because of the way it was buried by the volcano. Many of the people were killed by the poisonous gas from the volcano. If you only have time to do one site, do this one.

The mornings tour group was made up of people heading to Pompeii in the morning and either Herculaneum, the Amalfi Coast or Mount Vesuvius. We were the only ones in our group to opt for Herculaneum. This meant we were taken off the bus and placed in a new brand new Mercedes, to be chauffeur driven to Herculaneum. The driver was cool and for a small additional fee offered to drive as far as cars could go up mount vesuvius. So, in the end we managed all three after all.

When we returned to the hotel, we thought we would brave the streets of Napoli one more time. We had been warned by several guides to remove all jewelry, bags and wallets. This did not last as it was pretty obvious that blondie was a tourist. Too much attention so we retreated back to the safety of the hotel.
Thought for the day. You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you get what you need.
