Roaming Rome

We started our day with a trip to Piazza del Populo. This is a large square with a column brought from Egypt to Rome by (we think) Augustus Caesar. As it turns out there are heaps of these things in Rome. I think we saw them all in the course of the day.



Then we did the obligatory walk up the Spanish Steps. Underwhelming but beautiful nonetheless.



From there we popped in to the Capuchin Crypt. This was not on any map but should sought out on an trip to Rome. Here, the walls of the crypt have been decorated with the skulls and bones of the capuchin monks up until the 17th century. In the final crypt is a plaque with the inscription "What you are now, we once were. What you will be is what we are now." No photos are allowed but it didn't feel right to take one anyway.

So, it was then time for some shopping. We found what no one admitted existed and that was good leather (read gloves, shoes and handbags) shops in Rome. We will return tomorrow armed with passports for our tourist discount.

In the afternoon we took in the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Piazza Nuova and the Circus Maximus.







Back to the hotel for dinner and then wine on the roof overlooking the old city walls and main gates. An early night tonight a we have booked a 9 am time slots for the Vatican.



Thought for the day. Across the road, we have a small authentic Italian restaurant. It isn't much to look at but the food is sensational. So, when in Rome ...
